The Winner and Four Favourites. Cup in Graphite Competition.
Hi Guys
Thanks to everyone that entered this month’s drawing competition. We had a great response again. 🙂
I love all your ideas, the variations and the different things you choose to add and focus on.
After much deliberation this morning I have decided that my favourite is the below drawing by Helen Ward. Well done Helen! You will receive a Sketchout Gift voucher for the course of your choice.
I chose this to be the winner because I really like the simple yet graphic style of it. I like the strong shadow on the inside of the cup, the delicate handle and the blocky, stylised shadow on the surface it’s resting on. It reminds me of a David Hockney still life with the same uplifting quality, delicacy and focus on light.
Below are 4 of my other favourites…
By Ritva Georgiades
I thought this was really well observed and sensitively drawn. There is great reflection on the cup and good shading on both the cup and the napkin. I also like the fact that the cup is light and the background all dark.
By Jonathan Cross
This is a brilliant observational sketch of the hand and glass. I love the distortion of the fingers through the glass and the level of detail. It reminds me of the weird and wonderful drawings of M.C. Escher.
By Susan Hammond
I chose this because of the vibrancy and energy. I love the bold mark making and the feeling of immediacy. It has a very human quality to it that appeals to me.
By Diane Cox
I like the style of cup chosen and the smudging technique. I think this piece looks super realistic, almost photographic. It has great contrast with that bold shadow.
Thank you so much for all your wonderful entries and don’t forget to watch out for September’s competition which I will announce soon.
Love Rosa
